What is Revenue Integrity?

In an ideal world, every reservation in your CRS will fly as booked. Airlines do not unfortunately operate in an ideal world. Agents forget to issue tickets, passengers book journeys below MCT, and business people make duplicate bookings due to not being sure how long their meetings will last. Tickets aren’t always re-issued to reflect the latest change in the passenger’s itinerary.

All of these situations, and many, many more lead to poor quality bookings, and in many cases cause extra distribution and passenger handling costs. This is often referred to as ‘Revenue Leakage’ as these costs are avoidable, and the revenue at risk can be recovered – but only if you have a good Revenue Integrity (RI) solution.

A good solution will detect poor quality bookings and act to correct the issues found. It should be able to check both PNRs and Tickets. It should identify agents creating the problems; and the markets/routes most affected. It should put the flexibility to design detection and action workflows in the hands of the users.

If you can do all that, then you can save your airline US$Ms in reduced distribution costs, and increase the airline’s revenue through selling seats returned to inventory.

Iris Revenue Integrity suite

Our solution is called IRIS (Integrated Revenue Integrity Solution) and it detects and acts on poor quality bookings to ensure that leakage is minimised and revenue is maximised. It comprises four components:

SAND Data Warehouse – an airline-focused data warehouse which combines and enriches both PNR and Ticket data from all industry-standard sources

  1. ARID Revenue Integrity Detection – this is where users access and make changes to the RI functionality including highly flexible business rules and reports
  2. DASH Live Connectivity – this is the component that provides live CRS interaction, creating, retrieving and acting upon both PNRs and Queues
  3. CKPI Commercial Reporting – the component that delivers decision support and analytics for both the RI Team and the wider Commercial department

ARID Airline Revenue Integrity Detection

What are the Main Benefits of IRIS?

IRIS is a best-of-breed Revenue Integrity (RI) solution, used by both larger and smaller airlines. What really sets it apart from others is its wide range of RI detection functions, flexibility, visibility and cost-effectiveness.

  • Widest range of RI detection – the IRIS solution brings together PNR, Ticket and Post-Flight information which gives us the opportunity to carry out checks across the whole passenger lifecycle. There are in excess of 40 checks carried out. In addition IRIS can service CRS queues and work from lists provided to it.
  • Flexibility – the solution can work the way you want it to work. If you want to set it to auto-pilot, it will deal with booking quality issues in accordance with your detection criteria, using your workflow to decide upon the required action. It will then carry out whatever live check you define. Whilst we set IRIS up for you, we train you in how to design, test and promote your own changes. You can even create your own brand new RI functions.
  • Visibility – our heritage involves designing, developing and delivering operational business intelligence solutions for airlines. As a result, IRIS has excellent Management, Operational and Analytical reporting capabilities. The business benefits and operational activities are always visible to the users through integrated reporting which includes web-based self-service capability.
  • Cost-effectiveness – the solution delivers high value, for an investment that is very attractive. In our experience you can expect a Return on Investment (ROI) in the range of 5-15 and payback within one year. Our hosted ‘Software as a Service’ model removes big IT investment, delivering a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that compares very favourably with many in-house IT implementations. We also offer a license model which can spread costs over time for airlines with ready access to their own high-speed infrastructure.

What are the Key Features of IRIS?

IRIS is designed to give airlines a solution which is capable and adaptable to their individual market conditions. The out-of-the box capability includes both PNR and Ticket checks to deliver benefits quickly. Flexibility is also very important. The market does not stand still, and as an RI solution shuts one door, others typically open. Visibility of RI operation and its results is also vital – in terms of volume and value. IRIS has a number of key features which contribute to delivering a highly capable, flexible and visible Revenue Integrity solution.

  • Out-of-the-box RI checks – the IRIS solution has 23x PNR-based RI functions ranging from duplicates, impossible journeys, waitlist violation and MCT checks to no-show handling and APIS enforcement. The addition of ticket data enables us to deliver a further 14x Ticket-based RI functions such as class and route discrepancies, which indicate that a re-issue has been avoided. There are also other miscellaneous functions that handle special circumstances such as SPAs and transit connection rules.
  • User configuration – at every step of the Detect, Process, Act cycle the IRIS solution gives users the capability to configure the workflow. A component called User-Defined ARID allows users to design, build, test and promote their own new functions working either PNR/Ticket data or from queues. Every violation detected goes through configurable RI Rules that define the process workflow. The live checks carried out via the DASH component is also configurable. The rules can use external data referred to as User Lists to enhance decision-making, and also Keywords that are user-defined events/conditions such as Flight Disruptions or Premium Customers.
  • Top to bottom reporting – the reporting within IRIS provides the best of both worlds. There is a suite of integrated reports within the user front-end which provide details of performance at multiple levels: Management Dashboards, Functional Reports and Operational Analyses. Users also benefit from web-based dashboards and self-service capability that enables them to identify a number of KPIs such as the effects of RI on routes, and agents that are repeat offenders.

Would you like IRIS in-house or via Software as a Service?

Whether you choose IRIS SaaS or a more traditional in-house delivery, you can be sure that IRIS will deliver great results, quickly:

  • Software as a Service – we have invested heavily in very high-speed IBM Netezza data warehouse appliances, based in two geographically separated Tier 4 designed Data Centres in order to ensure our hosted ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) can cope with even the largest airline. This option speeds up implementation meaning that your airline will see the benefits of IRIS more quickly. It is based on Anari-owned infrastructure, which means that your investment is based on Operational Expenditure that does not require lengthy Capital purchase decisions. It also minimises the impact on scarce IT resources within the airline.
  • In-House – this more traditional delivery model gives the airline its own IRIS solution based on their own hardware. For airlines that have already invested in high-speed servers, this presents some opportunities. The Revenue Integrity solution is built upon our SAND data warehouse, which contains data that potentially has other Commercial uses for the airline. If airlines are wanting to benefit from implementing a Commercial data warehouse as well as Revenue Integrity then an in-house solution might be preferred.
