What is the SAND Commercial data warehouse?

In an ideal world, all the data created in the booking lifecycle would be in one place – from PNR creation, modification and even cancellation, right through to ticketing and departure. The data would be clean, enriched, joined up and available at both a detailed and summary level.

Our Commercial data warehouse called SAND (which stands for Strategic Airline Normalised Database) provides exactly that, and more.

SAND is designed specifically for airlines, by airline data specialists. It takes proper account of complex but industry-standard processes such as Groups, Codeshares, POS, O&Ds, Multi-Leg Flights and Marriage Logic. This ensures your data is clean and ready for use. It enriches the data so that you have available to you important details such as FQTV, Tier Levels, DOCs, SSRs and POS Name/City/Country. It joins up each passenger booking with their ticket and post-departure information – so you have intelligence on the full lifecycle of your passengers.

Our Commercial data warehouse solution is called SAND and it provides users with a clean, enriched, joined up data set across the booking lifecycle.

SAND has been developed to load industry-standard PNR and Ticketing data sets, and deals with complex airline-specific processes which can often trip up data warehouses designed and built by IT experts not familiar with the industry. The SAND data warehouse can be considered to include four steps:

  1. Load – bring your PNR and Ticket data into a logical airline data model
  2. Cleanse – deal with airline-specific processes such as Groups, Codeshares, Cancellations
  3. Enrich – gets the most out of your data e.g. by parsing OSI/SSRs and adding POS geographies 
  4. Join – bring the PNR, Ticket and associated post-departure data together for each passenger

Our SAND commercial data warehouse loads all of the industry-standard PNR and data feeds, whether your chosen CRS provider is Sabre, Amadeus, SITA or HP Enterprise. It loads consolidated Ticket files in either industry-standard TCN or HOT format.

We use it as the basis for our three airline applications which deliver Revenue Integrity, Passenger and Customer Profiling, and Commercial KPI reporting. In addition to these uses our SAND customers use the data warehouse to drive FQTV Accruals Handling, Forecasting versus Budget and Marketing Campaigns.

The SAND commercial data warehouse gives users a range of benefits:

  • Easy to implement – we can implement the SAND data warehouse for your airline in weeks, not years. It is ready to load industry-standard PNR and Ticket data, and implementation is a well-trodden path. The longest part of the project plan is normally the airline getting approvals and acquiring hardware. Our hosted SAND SaaS can even remove those delays.    
  • Flexible uses – the SAND commercial data warehouse will provide your airline with a vital (and often missing) part of your data architecture. We use it for Revenue Integrity, creating Single Customer View and Commercial KPI reporting. You may do the same, or you may find other creative uses like our existing customers – from PNR servicing to Loyalty handling and Forecasting.
  • Multiple platforms – we have a version of SAND that will fit with your airline, regardless of passenger volume and whether you prefer a hosted or in-house solution. SAND is in use with some of the world’s largest Tier 1 airlines using both our high-speed hosting SaaS (which is based on IBM Netezza hardware) and the Oracle RDBMS. It is also used effectively by Tier 2 to Tier 4 carriers on the Open Source PostgreSQL platform.

Our SAND commercial data warehouse can be considered to comprise four steps: Load, Cleanse, Enrich and Join. The following will give you an introduction to these key features of each step:

  • Load – the SAND commercial data warehouse has been designed to load all major industry-standard PNR and Ticket data feeds. It can load CDD, SBRRES, DMS or P2 data; IATA HOT or ATPCo TCN and similar derivatives. It has well-developed load control which includes full selective loading, load logging, referential integrity checks, email notification of success/fail and quarantine of bad data. It is fast, effective and stable.
  • Cleanse – it is important that the data loaded has integrity. The SAND data warehouse has in-built cleansing routines that deal with the challenges of our industry. Here are two examples: Cancelled segments disappear from the PNR data – the SAND load process ensures that these are still recorded in the data model. Codeshare bookings create duplicate segments – the SAND load process ensures that these ‘Information Segments’ are flagged and can be excluded from down-stream processes such as reporting. We have used our expertise gained over many years to ensure that the booking lifecycle of every PNR and Ticket is correct in the SAND data warehouse.
  • Enrich – we have worked on many diverse airline data projects, and one feature that is common is that PNR and Ticket data can seem like a secret language! Our SAND data warehouse takes away much of the mystery by organising the data using business terms, and by extracting and enriching the data as much as possible. For example we extract Passport details from SSR DOCS, we convert IATA numbers and host sales office IDs into agent names with a geography. We extract POS, carry out codeshare class mapping and create Origin & Destination routings. We create conjunction sequences, identify exchanges and extract full taxes. We identify no-show passengers and denied boarding. And many, many more data enrichments to make the data in the SAND data warehouse as useful as possible.
  • Join – the SAND data warehouse joins the passenger lifecycle data together, so you can clearly see what has happened to each passenger on a PNR; each Ticket that has been issued; and each segment that should have been travelled. The key features in this ‘joining’ step are PNR and Ticket matching and Post Departure handling. We have developed very robust techniques that ensure we can join each passenger to their associated ticket(s) even when there are changes and exchanges involved. Likewise we can identify who has travelled as intended, and whether the passenger no-showed or had a change in travel plan such as a denied boarding or a GOREC on an alternative flight.

  • Software as a Service – we have invested heavily in very high-speed IBM Netezza data warehouse appliances, based in two geographically separated Tier 4 designed Data Centres in order to ensure our hosted ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) can cope with even the largest airline.This option speeds up implementation, meaning that your airline will see the benefits of SAND more quickly. It is based on Anari-owned infrastructure, which means that your investment is based on Operational Expenditure that does not require lengthy Capital purchase decisions. It also minimises the impact on scarce IT resources within the airline.
  • In-House – this more traditional delivery model gives the airline its own SAND data warehouse based on your own hardware. For airlines that have already invested in high-speed servers and have a team of skilled database administrators then this may be a good choice, especially if the airlines is wanting to benefit from putting SAND to multiple uses.
